“Instructions for living a life: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.” ― Mary Oliver
but I heard this song this morning on my drive into work and had to Shazam it to find out the name of the tune and who sang it. I learned its “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri.
The song was written specifically for Twilight: Breaking Dawn — Part 1 the latest of the vampire hit series which has massive popularity with not just young girls, but also their moms! I know little of the book series and movies that followed, but what I do know is the marketing machine behind it seems to understand how important music is to their audience, as the other hit song from the soundtrack, by Bruno Mars, has already taken off. I’ve downloaded both to my Spotify playlist — they’re pretty good, take a listen from the videos yourself:
P.S. If you don’t Christina Perri, her first hit was “Jar of Hearts” from 2010 (which was introduced and propelled by two TV shows, So You Think You Can Dance and Glee). See it here, but be warned, lovely as her voice is, her tale of heartbreak and woe told in a Brandi Carlile songstress style will likely leave you feeling downright depressed, or at least quite melancholy. I imagine many teenagers full of post-break-up angst put this thing on repeat to nurse their wounds! No wonder she went on to be a Twilight darling.
